When Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom hit theaters in 2018, it brought us volcanic eruptions, genetic tinkering, and a whole lot of dino drama. Mattel took those themes and turned them into some of the slimiest (and weirdest) toys in the franchise. Today, we’re taking a closer look at three forgotten gems of the toyline: the Dino DNA Lab Kits with Velociraptor and Dimorphodon, and the Lava Surge Playset with its battle-worn Baryonyx.
Dino DNA Lab Kits – Dimorphodon & Velociraptor

Right: Dino DNA Lab Kits with Velociraptor (Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, Mattel, 2018)
Released as part of the Fallen Kingdom toyline, the Dino DNA Lab Kits are identical in design, differing only in the dinosaur figure they contain: a Velociraptor or Dimorphodon. Each set features a tall containment tank styled like a genetic test tube, complete with a fossil rack suspended from the roof.
The kits come with green or blue slime, which you pour into the tank. The real fun happens when you twist the lid, the slime will ooze down over the dinosaur fossil, just like a failed lab experiment straight out of Wu’s playbook.
It’s gross, it’s clever, and it’s a hands-on nod to the mad science that fuels the Jurassic saga.
Lava Surge Playset with Baryonyx

Also released in 2018, the Lava Surge Playset is Mattel’s take on one of Fallen Kingdom’s most intense scenes: the volcanic destruction of Isla Nublar. The set includes the bunker structure and an exclusive Baryonyx figure with one subtle but awesome detail: a red splotch on its head, referencing the moment lava drips onto the dinosaur in the movie.
The bunker features a hatch just like in the film. The grate surrounding the hatch allows the included orange slime (lava) to ooze down into the room below. There’s also a ladder leading to the roof, a side rail, and a breakaway wall that can burst open during play. It’s all very cinematic and chaotic, just like the film.
This set adds a great display or play piece for fans who want more environmental storytelling in their dino scenes.
A fun but limited toyline
Mattel’s slime-based Jurassic World toys are strange, silly, and surprisingly satisfying. Whether you’re covering raptors in goop or re-enacting lava meltdowns with Baryonyx, these sets are a snapshot of a moment when dino toys got delightfully messy. Honestly, we wish Mattel had made more toys like these in the line, there’s something irresistible about science experiments gone wrong, especially when slime is involved.
