LaserDisc is an optical disc format that was first introduced in 1978, offering high-quality video and audio playback. It was the first medium to provide near-DVD quality video and became popular in the 1980s and 1990s, especially among movie enthusiasts and collectors. Unlike VHS tapes, LaserDiscs were large, about 12 inches in diameter, and used a reflective surface to store video information, allowing for superior picture quality and sound. However, the format never achieved widespread commercial success due to its high cost and the emergence of more convenient formats like VHS and later DVD. Despite this, LaserDisc remains a cherished collectible for film buffs, appreciated for its extensive library of titles and its role in the evolution of home video technology.
