The Jurassic World Toy License: Will Mattel’s Reign Go Up in Smoke?

Universal Pictures is currently developing a new movie in the “Jurassic World” franchise, with David Koepp, the screenwriter of the original “Jurassic Park” and its sequel “The Lost World: Jurassic Park,” set to write the screenplay. The announcement was made by The Hollywood Reporter on January 22, 2024.

The question on everyone’s mind is whether Mattel will continue to hold the license for the upcoming movie or if Hasbro or another toy manufacturer will take over the helm. Mattel has been the official toy manufacturer for the “Jurassic World” franchise since 2018. However, Hasbro had the license for the “Jurassic Park” franchise from 1993 to 2015. In 2015, Hasbro embarked on a journey to capitalize on the dinosaur frenzy with their “Jurassic World” toy line, but their efforts fell flat, leaving many puzzled by the lackluster performance. Fast forward three years later, and the license shifted to Mattel.

It is possible that Hasbro may try to regain the license for the “Jurassic World” franchise. However, there is no official statement from Hasbro or Universal Pictures regarding this matter. Another possibility is that a new toy manufacturer may take over the helm. It is worth noting that Mattel and Hasbro have teamed up in the past for licensing deals. They recently collaborated for licensing deals for Barbie and Transformers, which were tied to major theatrical releases.

It is still unclear whether Mattel will continue to hold the license for the upcoming movie or if Hasbro or another toy manufacturer will take over the helm. We will have to wait for an official statement from Universal Pictures to know for sure.

Should Mattel continue produce toys for the new Jurassic World movie or should another company take over the helm. Let us know in the comments below!

  1. Definently Mattel!!! Their products are absolutely amazing and I love collecting them. Hazbro’s spin off with the made-up hybrids was a cool idea, but the showing screws, cat puples, and visible scars are just too monsterous. THe JP and JW dinosaurs aren’t and weren’t supposed to be monsters, but creatures who were brought back to life and now have to life with humans. And I think Mattel does a great job of demonstrating that. SO EXCITED FOR THE NEW MOVIE!!!!!!

  2. Mattel’s licensing contract is limited to how long ? Given the success of their lines, I don’t think Universal is going to take them away anytime soon, right ?

I think Hasbro is superior, but it is true that they showed a total disinterest in the license in 2015-16. But given the quality of their SW toys, which is much higher than what Mattel makes for my part, I think that if they put the resources into it, they will be a great success.
